On 25 June 2019, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn paid a visit to Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), located on Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) Campus, Hamburg, Germany. Dr. Somvong Tragoonrung, Executive Director of BIOTEC and Dr. Kuakoon Piyachomkwan, Deputy Executive Director of BIOTEC, also joined The Princess to visit CSSB’s research facility.
Officially, established in 2012 with cooperation of nine research partners, CSSB is a research institute, which focuses on infection biology and medicine, particularly bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens and their interactions with their host—the human body. Research at CSSB revolves around the development of an in-depth understanding of the underlying molecular structures of the infection process. To conduct its structural biology research, CSSB utilizes synchrotron radiation—PETRA III—and the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser, which are located on DESY’s Campus. The beamlines are also used in conjunction with single particle cryo-electron microscopy and a range of Omics technology in order to provide a full range of structural biology and analytical techniques. For instance, the research on “Red Blood Cell Invasion of the Malaria Parasite” that Dr. Tim Gilberger and his team at CSSB study the molecular basis for erythrocyte invasion of malaria parasite by combining genetic, cellular, biochemical, structural and systems biology based approaches with the aim to deliver a detailed molecular blueprint that will help define novel therapeutic targets.
