The 2016 National Dairy Fair took place during 27 January – 2 February 2016 at Muak Lek District, Saraburi Province. On 27 January, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the opening ceremony. The fair gathered the exhibitions of dairy farm industries, government agencies and private sector. This year, BIOTEC presented some of its work that facilitates the cattle reproductive management at the fair as follows:
- Bovine embryo sex determination by multiplex loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP): This protocol provides a fast, simple, and cost-effective tool for bovine embryo sexing. It can simultaneously detect both male-specific DNA and control DNA, within 90 minutes, in a single reaction tube using multiplex LAMP.
- Embryo cryopreservation using in-straw vitrification: With this technology, frozen embryo can be warmed up easily in one process for direct embryo transferring in the fieldwork. This protocol has an advantage over the Cryotop method as it does not require sophisticated equipment.
- Assay for quantification of progesterone levels in milk of dairy cattle: This is a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method for quantification of progesterone in milk samples of the dairy cows using specific monoclonal antibody to progesterone. The ability to detect progesterone in bovine milk allows estrus confirmation before artificial insemination, pregnancy exclusion diagnosis and ovarian activities determination.
