Three BIOTEC inventions claim awards in Korea

Three inventions utilizing technologies co-developed by BIOTEC won prizes for Thai startup companies at the 2017 Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF 2017) in Korea earlier this month. Barricane Co., Ltd. was awarded Gold Prize for its product “Long ranged mosquito repellent based on microencapsulation of natural extracts (MosShield).” Impress Rice Co., Ltd. received Silver Prize for “Co-fermentation of Riceberry extracts by Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a facial skin brightening agent,” and ADVATEC Co., Ltd. obtained Bronze Prize for “Brightening facial serum based on Riceberry rice extract.”

SIIF2017

“Long ranged mosquito repellent based on microencapsulation of natural extracts (MosShield)” employs microencapsulation technology called Polymer Assisted Sustain and Release Technology (PASAR) using biopolymers to encapsulate four types of formulated natural essential oils that work as a mosquito repellent effectively but are shown to have no cytotoxicity. The problem of the natural extracts (essential oils) is their low stability (due to high volatility), easy degradation in various conditions such as air, sunlight or heat. These affect the application in terms of efficiency and shelf life of storage. The time-releasing microencapsulation technology provides a longer shelf-life, higher repellent efficiency, control release and expanded area of mosquito repellency. The product utililises humidifier to transforms liquid colloid suspension into an aerosol which is proved to increase the mosquito repellency, while users will also feel relaxed and refreshed. Results from responses of field test have shown that this product also helps stimulating blood circulation and prevention of bacterial infections. It is also shown to improve migraine and running nose from flu, as well as relieves respiratory tract disease. This invention is a collaboration between Barricare Co., Ltd. and BIOTEC researchers from Bio-organic Chemistry Laboratory (Dr. Srung Smanmoo, Dr. Weerachai Nasomphan and Ms. Phiyada Khayak)

For the Silver Prize innovation, an extract from co-fermentation of Riceberry rice by Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Saccharomyces cerevisiaewas investigated. The protein in the extract is further hydrolyzed to short peptides for improving the deeper penetration into skin. Riceberry rice peptide is shown to have anti-aging and botox-like activities to significantly reduce fine lines and wrinkles within a few weeks, as well as help boosting collagen and other elastic fibers so that the users will look younger. As Riceberry rice also contains anthocyanin, a purple pigment with antioxidant activity, the extract is found to reduce degradation of skin cells, as well as boosting collagen underneath the skin. This invention is a collaboration between Impress Rice Co., Ltd. and BIOTEC researchers (Dr. Srung Smanmoo, Dr. Weerachai Nasomphan, Mr. Varinthon Chairojrat and Ms. Patcharapak Suriwong)

In “Brightening facial serum based on Riceberry rice extract”, PASAR technology is exploited, using biopolymers to encapsulate polyphenol extractsed from Thai Riceberry rice to improve shelf-life, efficiency and controlled-release property of the active ingredient. Polyphenols are known as is a turbo-charged antioxidant that combats oxidative stress, slows down skin aging and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by boosting the formation of collagen and elastic fibers. Furthermore, this Riceberry rice microcapsules the microcapsules from polyphenols extracted from Thai Riceberry rice is shown to exhibit as a skin brightening agent due to its tyrosinase inhibition which is the key enzyme for the skin pigment synthesis (melanin). The invention was developed by ADVATEC Co., Ltd. and BIOTEC research team (Dr. Srung Smanmoo, Dr. Weerachai Nasomphan and Mr. Panudet Pramunsin) SIIF 2017 was organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) under the patronage of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA). The event took place on 30 November to 3 December 2017.  Participation of these three companies, along with the other startups, in SIIF 2017 was supported NSTDA Business Incubation Center (BIC) under Startup Voucher program. Sixteen Thai startups brought home a total of 14 prizes (3 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze).
