🌿 Background 🌿
Cassava stands as a versatile solution with the potential to revolutionize sustainable energy and food systems. As a staple food in numerous developing nations, cassava holds the key to a resilient value chain that extends beyond culinary use. This powerful crop can catalyze a transition toward cleaner cooking methods, addressing the pressing need outlined in Sustainable Development Goal No. 7.
🌾 Why Cassava? 🌾
Unlike other bioenergy crops, cassava thrives in low-fertility soils and adverse climates, proving its worth in the face of challenges like drought (Jolayemi & Opabode, 2018). Its remarkable adaptability positions it as a frontrunner for bioethanol production, catering to both first- and second-generation biofuels. Even cassava waste emerges as a potent contender, serving as feedstock for household and industrial bioenergy production.
📢 What to Expect 📢
The webinar will explore advanced concepts, such as biorefinery and circular economy as well as techniques of climate-resilient cassava cultivation. Additionally, the session will highlight experiences of micro-distilleries from Tanzania and present the UNIDO Microdistilleries Guidebook with examples drawn from the African Experience. Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the potential of cassava as a feedstock for bioethanol for clean cooking in developing countries, in addition to meeting the need for food and other high-value products. The speakers will equip the participants with knowledge and share best practices to unlock the full potential of the cassava value chain to maximize its economic, social, and environmental benefits.
🌟 Organizers 🌟
CECC was launched at COP 27 in Egypt jointly by Mali, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, and Kenya. It is a multi-stakeholder platform of developing country members, development partners, and industry experts to share technical information and experience, including best practices so as to create a sustainable ethanol industry and associated value chains in the member countries. It engages with developing countries (especially the high-impact countries) on the topic of ethanol for clean cooking to increase their awareness, and capacities, strengthen their ambition, and lead them towards achieving the SDG 7 goal and meeting NDC commitments. BIOTEC is Thailand’s national research and development organization specializing in cassava cultivation technologies and several other high-value products.
